Autumn Leaves of Matsushima Part 1

Japan, Matsushima, Autumn, Fall, 松島, 紅葉

Every year, people from all over the world come to Japan to see the famous 桜 (sakura), or cherry blossoms. The delicate pink flowers deserve their fame but the colours of Autumn are no less stunning. 紅葉 (kouyou) are the leaves that change from green to a wide spectrum of browns, reds and golds. Kouyou viewing is a popular activity, but sadly lacking the alcohol-fuelled picnics of Spring.

I've posted many times about Miyagi's famous scenic spot Matsushima, but now I'll show you something new. Last November (yes, this is a delayed post) there was a kouyou "light-up" show. The most spectacular trees and colours were carefully enhanced by well-placed flood lights. For a tiny fee - I forget...maybe 200yen - we gained access to the temple grounds that housed the really top-notch stuff. I don't have much else to add so for the most part I'll let the photos speak for themselves.

As you enjoy the pictures, please imagine the peaceful silence of the Japanese night...and the bitter cold that we endured to appreciate the beauty!

That's it for part one! Since my (vague) plan is to move to Tokyo this Summer, I probably wont get to see these beautiful sights again any time soon. But I least I have about a million photos of last year. Check back for part two on the collection soon - including the prettiest reflections you've ever seen!

    1. The architecture here is so interesting! Of course the traditional styles are beautiful but modern techniques are interesting. Taking into account the need to protect against earthquakes and so on - fascinating!

      Thanks for visiting!
